TIPS FOR PISTON RING INSTALLATION

Piston rings are one of the most critical parts in the engine that need special considerations while installation. While installation piston rings, a vehicle piston ring manufacturer has to keep several things in mind. Following are a few tips that help them to install perfectly.

The end gaps of rings must be checked with the feeler gauge. The perfect ring gap should be 0.004” per inch of the bore of the cylinder. If your cylinder liner is bored by 3.0”, the ring gap should be 0.12”.

Rings must be installed in their rightful order. The oil ring should be installed first, then the second middle ring and at last the top ring should be installed. This will help you in keeping you specific to the required measurements.

The trade mark on the top most piston rings should be facing upward. All top rings has this mark which can be seen at the one end of the piston ring.

The piston and rings should be supported by something while putting them into the cylinder. This will help you in keeping your piston and cylinder safe from any collusion. The cylinder must be gently slide for which you may use small screwdriver.
